Beginning July 2025, the Government of Canada is rolling out the Canada Disability Benefit (CDB) — a new federal financial support program designed to enhance income security for working-age adults with disabilities.
At Precious Flower Healthcare, we believe in sharing accessible and reliable information with our community. Here's a simple breakdown of what this benefit means and how you can prepare.
💡 What Is the Canada Disability Benefit?
The CDB is a monthly payment of up to $200 per month (or $2,400 per year) for eligible individuals. The actual amount you receive depends on your income level.
This benefit aims to reduce poverty and improve financial stability among persons with disabilities, especially those facing income insecurity.
✅ Who Is Eligible?
To qualify for the Canada Disability Benefit, you must:
Be 18 to 64 years old
Be approved for the Disability Tax Credit (DTC)
Have filed your 2024 federal income tax return
Be a Canadian resident, and
Be a Canadian citizen, permanent resident, protected person, or a temporary resident with 18+ months in Canada (or registered under the Indian Act)
💵 Income Thresholds and Benefit Reduction
Your income will affect how much you receive. Here's a quick overview:

If your working income meets the exemption threshold, your benefit eligibility may increase:
Singles: Up to $33,000
Couples: Up to $46,500
📅 When Will Payments Begin?
June 2025: First month of eligibility
July 2025: First payments issued
📝 What Are the Next Steps?
1. Applications open June 20, 2025
2. Make sure your 2024 taxes are filed
3. Apply and get approved for the Disability Tax Credit (DTC) if you haven’t already
🧾 How to Apply for the Disability Tax Credit (DTC)
The Disability Tax Credit (DTC) is a non-refundable tax credit that helps reduce the amount of income tax people with disabilities (or their supporters) may have to pay. It is also a requirement for receiving the Canada Disability Benefit (CDB).
🔹 Steps to Apply for the DTC:
1. Download the Form:
Visit the CRA website and download Form T2201 – Disability Tax Credit Certificate
2. Get a Medical Professional to Complete It:
A licensed medical practitioner (e.g., doctor, nurse practitioner, psychologist, occupational therapist, etc.) must complete and sign the form.
They will certify the nature and severity of your disability.
3. Submit to the CRA:
You can send the completed form by mail or submit it digitally through CRA My Account.
4. Wait for a Decision:
CRA will review your application and mail you a decision letter. Processing time can range from 8 to 16 weeks.
💰 Funding Support for DTC Application
Getting the DTC form completed may come with a doctor’s fee or clinic fee, especially if the professional charges for the form completion. However, here are potential ways to cover those costs:
1. ODSP (Ontario Disability Support Program):
If you’re an ODSP recipient, you may request coverage for medical form fees, including DTC form completion.
Speak with your ODSP caseworker and ask if they will provide a Mandatory Special Necessities benefit or a one-time coverage.
2. Disability Tax Credit Clinics (Free Help):
Some community organizations, such as disability advocacy centers or tax clinics, offer free assistance with DTC applications (especially during tax season).
Look for local organizations such as:
March of Dimes Canada
ARCH Disability Law Centre
Community Volunteer Income Tax Program (CVITP)
3. Medical Insurance (if applicable):
Some private or student health plans might reimburse part of the fee if the form is filled out as part of a disability accommodation process.
